And the idea of nothingness – the most terrifying of all ideas, when thought of with feeling – has, in my dear master’s work and in my memories of him, something as high and luminous as sunlight upon snowy, unscalable peaks.

About This Quote

In The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoevsky writes of the thought of nothingness as it relates to God, as well as the idea of nothingness as it relates to suicide. Both of these ideas are terrifying. The thought of the nothingness of God being a being that cannot be understood or measured is terrifying. For every person who believes in something, there is someone who does not believe in it.

Therefore, no one can prove that there is a God. The same goes for the idea of nothingness as a result of suicide. Suicide takes away life and the fear of death is terrifying.

It makes us question whether we will live on after we die and whether we will be alone.
